Awarded the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Valdes Peninsular in Argentina is a gamut of sea lions, seals, whales and seabirds. Another permanent resident at the peninsular is the southern sea lions along with the European Hare and the Guanacos.

A prominent sight is the frequent visits of the Orcas or the killer whale. This is nature at its best, especially if you are lucky to catch an Orca lunging near the shore in an attempt to devour a sea lion. Sights seen only on Animal Planet and The National Geographic. In reality this is even more spectacular and you might just catch yourself gaping at the event of two mammoths in their natural heinous environment.

Birds coming to the peninsular are plenty and most of them you wouldn't have probably seen. It is an absolutely rare sight to watch Guanay, Giant petrels, American oystercatchers, the white-headed flightless Steamer-duck, black-browed Albatross and many more. There are other land birds like the Elegant Crested Tinamou, Yellow-Finch, White-throated Cacholote etc.

If you are out on boat you will find several water species gliding past and getting close to the boat. You may also catch a tail fin outside of the waters only to be surprised by the water that sprays on your face due to the splashing of the tail fin on the water. This makes a great picture.

Another interesting species to watch out for in the Valdes Peninsular is the Magellanic Penguin that has black-brown shading. You would be surprised with their friendliness as they walk past you in their herd. Sometimes being spontaneous can lead you to the real nature of the place you are visiting. Experiencing the unknown can be one of the most memorable moments of your vacation.

So do your homework. Even though you might resent having to work so hard to have fun, it will pay off when that vacation date finally arrives. One thing that is great about Colorado is its accessibility to nature and its beauty. The state has made it easy for you to plan your vacation via its twenty-five scenic byways, about half of which are also designated as America's Byways, more than any other state. So load up the family and take a drive. Some routes are located along paved highways, while others require four-wheel drive, high-clearance vehicles. Thus, it might just take you several years to complete the task. Who said vacations and bucket lists were supposed to be easy?

A Brief History Of the Amalfi Coast

Nowadays, the Amalfi Coast of Italy is perhaps best known for being one of the country's main tourist destinations, and for its quaint yet luxurious offer of accommodation in the form of Amalfi villas. Next to Tuscany and Venice, this stretch of coast attracts the most tourists to the 'Boot of Europe' each summer, with its well-balanced mix of beaches, walking trails, breathtaking sights and, indeed, history.

In fact, while a little lost in the tourist shuffle, the history of this coast is just as long and interesting as that of any other region of Italy, and indeed more so than many. Far from being defined solely by luxury Amalfi villas, the area genuinely offers enough background to interest history enthusiasts, as well as to help put the local monuments into perspective.

Early History

A large portion of the region's early history ended up taking a back seat to the gruesome and tragic happenings in nearby Pompeii and Herculaneum. Compared to these tragedies, the fate of the little Roman settlement prised from Neapolitan hands seemed less than relevant, and it was thus the region managed to evolve in a relatively understated way.

But living in the shadow of these infamous occurrences by no means meant that the settlement's history was uneventful. Much to the contrary; in 1073, the town was conquered by the Normans and added to the Kingdom of Sicily, where it would spend the next several centuries.

Nor were the Middle Ages a simple time for the residents here; trade volumes for the settlement slowly dwindled, going from a national scale to a much more regional one, mostly concentrating on Southern Italy. The final nail in the coffin was an outbreak of plague in 1638, which wiped out nearly half the town's population.

Rebirth

It might have seemed as though the plague outbreak had spelled the end for the town, but the opposite was actually true: the settlement slowly, but gradually, began to rise from its ashes and experience a shift in fortune. Alongside other notable regional towns like Sorrento (coming off centuries of Turkish domination), Positano and Ravello, it began a 'second existence'. But while the other towns hinged this second life on commerce, Amalfi chose to focus on tourism, becoming one of Italy's main attractions in this regard. Needless to say, this was when the first few tourist-driven Amalfi villas began to appear, although they were nowhere near as numerous as they are today. Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, the region continued to expand, slowly approaching what it is today.

It is clear, then, that the history of this stunning coastline leaves little to be desired when compared to those of other regions, either in Italy or elsewhere in Europe. While not as eventful as that of many other towns, the chronology of this part of Italy is nonetheless interesting enough to keep it from being defined simply by its popular Amalfi villas.

Learning About the Medici Villas in Tuscany

A number of grand villas in Tuscany were built at the height of the Florentine Renaissance, by the powerful Medici family. The 12 primary villas, located near the arts epicentres of Florence and Lucca, are prime examples of Renaissance and Baroque architecture. By the end of the 16th century there were 16 major estates surrounding Florence and at least 11 secondary ones dotted across the Tuscan countryside. The villas attained UNESCO World Heritage Site status in 2013.

The UNESCO Committee wrote the following about the Medici creations: "They bear testimony to the influence the Medici Family exerted over modern European culture through its patronage of the arts. Built between the 15th and 17th Centuries, they represent an innovative system of rural construction in harmony with nature and dedicated to leisure, the arts and knowledge."

From Fortress to Palace

The Medici villas in Tuscany are rural compounds, built between the 15th and 17th centuries. They served several purposes but were primarily the Medici's country palaces and symbols of their wealth and power. The family used them as leisure resorts and many were strategically located near excellent hunting locations. However, they also served an important economic purpose for the communities that surrounded them, as centres of agricultural activities.

The first of the Medici villas in Tuscany, built in the 14th century, were fairly austere looking structures that were strong fortified. The Villa del Trebbio and the one at Carfaggiolo were considered the original homes of the Medici family. Over time, the family began to have their homes designed with additional recreational spaces and landscaped gardens, such as the ones seen at Careggi and Fiesole.
The Finest Period Architecture

The later ones are said to be some of the finest examples of Renaissance and Baroque architecture in the region. They were accompanied by elaborate gardens, which became as admired as the structures themselves. The garden at the Villa di Castello was the first to be designed by Niccolo Tribolo, for Cosimo I de' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany. Tribolo later went on to design the stunning Boboli Gardens at the Palazzo Pitti in Florence.

Each estate was owned by a significant member of the Medici family and served as a microcosm of the Medici court. The Duke would travel from home to home, depending on his needs or desires. He would stay at the Villa del Trebbio for hunting, move on to the Villa dell' Ambrogiana in the spring and then to the cooler climate of the Villa di Artimino during the hot summer months.

The Legacy

The 12 primary Medici villas in Tuscany are said to be the first examples of the connection between architecture, gardens and the environment seen in Italy. The buildings and their surrounding gardens embodied the ideal of living in harmony with nature, with dedication to the pursuit of arts, leisure and knowledge. They set the standard for princely residences throughout Europe and their influence can still be seen today.
